Emmett and Phil had been underwater for the last twenty minutes. Hank wasn't concerned. Emmett said they had an hour's worth of air in their tanks. While he waited, he was looking up Scriptures on a Bible app Joe had told him about. Something kinda triggered in him after that conversation he and Joe had about how Joe prayed about everything, even things on the job. For some reason, Hank had never considered involving the Lord in things that practical or mundane.
And he certainly never imagined the Bible actually said anything about cops. But there it was in Romans 13, just like Joe said. Of course, the Bible didn't say cops, but it was clearly talking about people in authority being used by God to punish evildoers. That made Hank curious about what else the Bible might have to say about the ordinary affairs of his life, so he started looking things up. Joe suggested he might enjoy reading the Proverb of the Day, since there were thirty-one of them and about the same number of days in a month.
He was just finishing today's proverb when the steady stream of bubbles coming from the pond got more active. He walked over to the spot where Emmett and Phil got in, just in time to see them come up to the surface. Both men swam over to the flat stones and lifted their dive masks. Both were smiling.
"So, did you find my bullet?" Hank said.
"No, but we found something," Emmett said. "Not sure what to make of it. Don't know if it came from that boy who got killed, or if it got dropped by one of those young-ins who used to fish here all the time."
"What are you talking about, Emmett?"
"Got it right here in my bag. Hold on, I'll get it out." He set the metal detector on the stones then reached into some side pouch strapped to his waist. He pulled out something that glittered in the sun and held it up.
Hank saw a chain hanging down from Emmett's palm, like from a necklace.
"Some kind of medal," Emmett said. "Don't have my glasses on, and I'm not Catholic. So, even if I could read what was on this thing, I wouldnât know what it was about."
"I was telling him it's a St. Christopher medal," Phil said. "I'm almost positive that's what it is. Or else St. Anthony. One of them saints, anyway. We were raised Catholic, but I stopped going after high school."
Hank lifted the necklace from Emmett's hand, wiped it clean, then held it close. "We used to go to church when I was a kid," he said, "but I've kinda gotten rusty on who the different saints are. I'd have to agree with Phil. That looks like one of those saint medals people wear. Let me go ahead and bag it. Somebody back at the station will know what it is. Is that the only thing you found?"
"So far, it is," Emmett said. "It's a little darker down there than last time.
